Join us and hear how Mark Miles and Allison Melangton of Hulman Motorsports are using their proven model of taking a dynamic committee of enthusiastic volunteers and applying it to United Way’s yearlong celebration. They know a thing or two about making a big event happen as they have done in the past for the Super Bowl, several NCAA Final Four events and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Centennial Celebration. They will share how they have structured the committee around these three goals – raising awareness of the needs in our community, making noise around the 100th by involving as many people as possible and elevating United Way to create a stronger base of support for the next 100 years.

"We haven't heard from you in a couple of years and assumed that you were, frankly, taking us for granted." "It has felt like you really just expected us to give each year and we haven't had any reports or even a thank you for so long that we have lost track." "I'm not sure why you are even here, it feels like we have lost contact with you and that you have lost some relevance in our community." This session will discuss these pitfalls and many more that many United Ways have faced at one time or another while conducting resource development. Often it will take place during campaigns but sometimes it happens outside the normal campaign. Either way, how you recover is key to your long-term success. How do you "fall on your sword" and recover with grace and aplomb?

United Ways can play a critical role in serving as a community catalyst to spur positive action and advocacy. Half of public policy advocacy is simply figuring out how to craft your message and then how to communicate it. In this session, we'll explore ways to effectively message and communicate network and local public policy priorities. We'll provide guidance on which communications channels to use and when, and how to tailor your messaging for different audiences. This session will also spotlight an effective issue campaign and how United Ways of all sizes have participated to address community challenges through advocacy.

The Board is a key leadership asset especially for United Way's revenue development efforts. Join in as we discuss how United Ways have recruited, developed, and engaged great Board members to set and achieve ever-greater revenue goals. Learn what the Board could " and should" be doing and add more tools to your toolbox on how the Board can be powered up to help drive revenue growth for your United Way. Rebuilding momentum requires change leadership, vision and hard work. This session will explore the key functions of United Ways and how to ensure that they are working in harmony to build momentum that allows for growth and sustainability. Using the analogy of the fly wheel, the key functions of United Ways will be laid out and examples provided on how their alignment allows for the work of the entire structure to proceed in ways that reinforce one another and produce new energy and results.

This presents a unique and evolving relationship to the role of a local United Way in those communities. This roundtable conversation is intended for United Ways of all sizes who serve rural communities to explore the challenges presented and identify practices to address them.
Small town, small staff, BIG CAMPAIGN		3/6/2018	3/6/2018	10:30 AM	11:45 AM	3/6/2018 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM They say there's more than one way to skin a cat. There's more than one way to run a community-wide United Way campaign too. How do you structure YOUR campaign? Many United Ways have detailed committee levels and divisions requiring large numbers of volunteers representing each business sector. But what if you are in a small town, with few volunteers, no loaned executives, and limited staff? Dave Bezusko of United Way of Logan County (Bellefontaine, Ohio) will share his UW's simple but effective Campaign Plan for small UW's that leaves no stone unturned and is structured by HOW YOU MAKE THE ASK, not by business sector. The Campaign Plan incorporates all elements of the fundraising cycle, is easily tracked, encourages volunteer participation in all areas, and would be easily adaptable to any community. By using this structure, Bezusko's UW's have seen campaign increases in 12 of the last 13 years and have raised $11.5 million over that time.

Integrate 2-1-1 into the mission of your United Way following the successful example from United Way of Dane County on area like: 2-1-1 expertise informing community solution work – identifying greatest needs being served or unmet, community demographics asking for assistance vs. requiring targeted outreach, collecting specific demographic information to inform planning; Initiative partnerships that 2-1-1 is the access point – submitting application, checking eligibility, solving service provision issues, etc.; Marketing opportunities – highlighting of specific initiatives, outreach to companies that may need 2-1-1 for employees, ability to have a “story” in the news when no events are scheduled.

Block B: Leading the Future Now: Peeking Into Your Preferences		3/6/2018	3/6/2018	3:45 PM	5:00 PM	3/6/2018 3:45 PM - 5:00 PM This session will provide a detailed overview of 5 Future-Focused Mindsets. Participants will be asked to complete the Future-Focused Mindset assessment prior to the break out session and come prepared to discuss the implications of understanding their individual mindset and the potential mindsets of team members, board members and workplace partners. Participants will engage in table conversations to explore how understanding these mindset preferences can support them in effectively leading the future during this time of disruptive change.
Block B: Transforming the Local United Way Business Model		3/6/2018	3/6/2018	3:45 PM	5:00 PM	3/6/2018 3:45 PM - 5:00 PM With changes in the economy, demographics, technology, and trends in giving, the traditional revenue model of United Way must evolve. In 2016, the Board approved the creation of a Task Force for Transformation to explore how United Way of Dane County could accelerate revenue growth to transform more lives of people in Dane County facing poverty, unemployment, academic struggles, health crises, and other challenges. This session will provide an overview of the process, the recommendations of the Taskforce, next steps for 2018, and insights on how this process can be scaled by United Way's of any size. Time will be allotted for Q&A.
Block B: Using Technology to Advance the Work		3/6/2018	3/6/2018	3:45 PM	5:00 PM	3/6/2018 3:45 PM - 5:00 PM There are many inexpensive ways to use technology to make United Way's work better, faster, and more strategic. But small United Ways with limited staff and limited capacity may not know what the options are, or even where to start to explore them. This session will give practical examples of how one mid-sized United Way utilized technology to greatly enhance marketing and communications efforts with corporate partners and the community in general. From building a new website on a less expensive, do-it-yourself platform, to utilizing more expansive digital storage spaces, to creating easy-to-use video production programs, United Way of Southwest Michigan streamlined their use of technology to become more hands on and more efficient…and at a more manageable budget! This session will also integrate a roundtable-style dialogue to see how other United Ways are utilizing technology to be a more effective organization.

Capitalize on the knowledge by engaging these donors in high impact affinity groups!

This session will explore a variety of ideas for United Ways of all sizes to find, produce, and share compelling content within any budget and across a variety of channels: print, online, video, audio, and more. Special attention will be given to adapting stories to United Way's new United We Fight/United We Win brand lens. We will also review United Way Worldwide's approach to our Editorial Calendar and quarterly themes focusing on Financial Stability, Youth Success, Childhood Success and Health. DEEP DIVE The Mechanics of Multi-Year Funding		3/7/2018	3/7/2018	9:00 AM	12:00 PM	3/7/2018 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Moving from an annual funding process to a multi-year funding model is a big change. United Ways that make this shift need to think about big philosophical issues like designations and priority areas, but they also need to think about details like partner agreements and timelines. During this session, four different United Ways will walk you through their transition process. They'll touch on theory and impetus for change, the logistics of how they managed and administered the process, and key lessons learned along the way. In addition, they'll cover topics such as: how to create a multi-year impact agenda, how to utilize and engage volunteers in the process, how to help current partner agencies navigate through this change, and how to work with the resource development and marketing staff to message and sell the change to donors. The session will be formatted as a round-table discussion with each of the various United Ways, and is meant to show a broad range of processes.
DEEP DIVE We can't program our way out: PSE Change		3/7/2018	3/7/2018	9:00 AM	12:00 PM	3/7/2018 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM The first session opens with Lisa Falduto, United Way Portage County, will discuss how the need for a broader, systems change approach to addressing community concerns emerged and how United Way Portage County proceeded to engage the community and build a coalition. This will be followed by facilitated activities for each participant to work on, relating to how they could begin authentic community engagement and building a coalition for systemic change. Maureen Busalacchi with Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment, will discuss how its change in its granting philosophy occurred - moving away from interventions to systemic change. Maureen Busalacchi will also lead the group activities that participants can use with their partnerships. In the second session, Sarah Inman will discuss how Brown County United Way has evolved its community impact model over the past 12 years to incorporate a more purposeful focus on systems change, aided in part by grants from Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment. Sarah and Maureen will address what it has taken to change the organizational culture for systems and policy change. Participants will engage in a systems mapping exercise; the exercise will also help participants highlight decision makers and community engagement/buy-in. In addition, the exercise can be taken back home and used with partners.
Block B: 2-1-1 Implementation Model: Small Markets		3/7/2018	3/7/2018	10:45 AM	12:00 PM	3/7/2018 10:45 AM - 12:00 PM The session includes how Kishwaukee United Way announced intentions and fostered support for the initiative in their area, secured funding, partnered with volunteers to foster agency involvement and publicize effort to the greater community, and how they are currently marketing the effort.
Block B: Increasing Capacity to do Evaluation		3/7/2018	3/7/2018	10:45 AM	12:00 PM	3/7/2018 10:45 AM - 12:00 PM Evaluation and data collection can be complicated. Often funded partners do not have trained staff people that are able to provide quality information that we as Untied Ways can use and share with the community. What can WE do to insure that the data being collected and shared is of the up most quality? What types of tips and tricks are available to increase capacity to agencies? How do we ensure that funded partners are utilizing the information they are collecting to increase the quality of programming they are providing and to better tell the story of the work they do? Finally, how do we as United Ways take the aggregated picture of all of this information and best tell the story of how United Way fights for the Education, Financial Stability and Health of our community.

Surrounding yourself with the team you need to be supportive and successful is important to accomplishing goals while preventing burn out. This session will endeavor to provide practical knowledge on how to build that team and keep your momentum.
Block B: Small United Way BIG Impact - Framing Impact strategies as Investment Products		3/7/2018	3/7/2018	10:45 AM	12:00 PM	3/7/2018 10:45 AM - 12:00 PM This session will be geared to how small United Ways can leverage Community Impact successes into investment products that will grow relationships, partnerships, good will, and revenue to sustain work into the future. The focus will be on “easy wins” – something that meets a need (that the community has identified), increases visibility in the community, requires committed partners, and is doable with a small staff.

Together we will explore the two generation approach, what that means at an agency level, and how it is integrating our community impact work across the community. We will also dive into the evaluation of this approach and how we are telling the story to better engage our investors in the work.

In 2015 he brokered the merger of a Metro 5 United Way with a Metro 1 United Way which allowed the smaller United Way to maintain its 501-c-3 status, maintain its local identity, increase funding available for community impact, and reduced future administrative costs. The session will cover how to identify conditions favorable or unfavorable for consideration of a full merger or joint operating agreement, the benefits and costs associated with nonprofit mergers, processes for working through a merger agreement, consideration of all stakeholder needs, marketing and message strategies for informing donors and communities, and an overview of legal requirements. Garth currently teaches graduate level nonprofit management classes at UNLV, consults with the local United Way and other nonprofit organizations.

(Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) project is a grassroots movement committed to strengthening communities by improving the lives of ALICE. ALICE represents the men and women of all ages and races, who get up each day to go to work but who face tough financial choices. Do they put dinner on the table or pay for the car repairs? Although they are working, due to child care costs, transportation challenges, the high cost of living and so much more, they are living paycheck to paycheck. This session will share resources that are available to every community at no cost. The resources include FamilyWize prescription medication savings cards, Earned Income Tax Credit, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) MyFreeTaxes and NCOA (National Council on Aging) programs.
